Know When to Head to the Er First

Some Emergencies Need a 911 Call Before a Dentist

We manage the majority of dental emergencies here in Southfield, but some cases need urgent medical care before dental treatment. If you have any of the following symptoms, call 911 or go to the closest emergency room immediately:

Listen to your body. If anything feels beyond a typical toothache or chipped tooth, call 911 or head to the nearest ER without delay. Once the medical team gives you the all-clear, contact our office and we’ll arrange follow-up care to address the dental side of the problem as soon as possible.

Fast relief when it matters

Common Emergencies And How to Respond Before Your Visit

A sudden toothache, broken tooth, or lost filling can throw off your whole day. With emergency dentistry, we help you get urgent problems evaluated quickly so you can stop worrying and start moving toward a fix. That faster response can protect your smile and help you get back to normal life sooner.
Soft Tissue Injury
Cuts and tears to the lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums look worse than they often are, but they still need attention. Rinse with a mild salt water solution and apply firm, steady pressure with clean gauze or a damp cloth. Hold it in place for a full 15 to 20 minutes without peeking. If the bleeding hasn’t slowed by then, head to the nearest emergency room and let us know so we can coordinate your follow-up care.
Time is everything here, so call us the moment it happens. While you’re on your way, pick the tooth up by the crown and leave the root alone. A quick rinse with clean water is fine if there’s debris, but don’t scrub or wipe off any tissue clinging to it. If you feel comfortable, slide it back into the socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it steady. If reinserting isn’t possible, drop the tooth into a small cup of milk or tuck it between your cheek and gums to keep it moist. The sooner we see you, the better the odds of saving that tooth for good.
A cracked tooth can feel alarming, but you’re in great hands once you reach our office. Rinse gently with warm water and hold a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to ease any swelling. Gather any pieces you can find and bring them along, since they often help us plan the best repair. Stick to chewing on the opposite side until we can see you, ideally the same day.
Tooth pain rarely improves on its own, and we’d much rather see you sooner than later. Swish warm salt water around your mouth to calm the area, then floss carefully in case something is wedged between teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help bridge the gap until your visit. One important note: never place aspirin directly on the gums. It burns the soft tissue and adds a second problem to the one you already have.
A lost crown or filling leaves the tooth underneath vulnerable, so we’ll get you back in quickly to make it right. In the meantime, you can temporarily seat a loose crown using a small dab of denture adhesive or toothpaste. For a missing filling, sugar-free gum or temporary dental cement from the pharmacy will shield the exposed area until your appointment. Chew on the other side and let us handle the permanent restoration.
Try gentle, careful flossing first. That alone solves most cases. What we ask you to avoid is reaching for pins, toothpicks, or anything metal, since those tend to scratch enamel or cut into the gums. If floss doesn’t free it, give us a call and we’ll take care of it comfortably in the office.

Every Minute Matters When It Comes to Saving Your Smile

Your Emergency Visit Path

What to Expect During Your Emergency Visit

A dental emergency feels overwhelming on its own, and not knowing what comes next only piles on the stress. Here’s exactly how we handle urgent visits at our Easton office so you feel informed and at ease from the moment you walk through the door.
1

Focused Exam and 3D Imaging

We bring you straight back and zero in on the source of your pain right away. Using our Planmeca ConeBeam CT scanner and digital intraoral scanners, we capture a precise look at what’s happening beneath the surface. Whether the problem is a fracture, an infection, or nerve involvement, our imaging gives us a clear, accurate picture so we can plan your care with confidence rather than guesswork.
2

Same-Visit Treatment and Comfortable Pain Relief

Once we assess the situation, we act fast. Thanks to our in-house lab, 3D printing, and same-day crown tech, many emergencies are fixed in one visit. Whether it’s a filling, extraction, or crown, we handle it here. For anxious patients or complex treatments, IV sedation keeps you calm and comfortable.
3

Recovery Instructions and a Clear Follow-Up Plan

Before you head home, we walk you through everything you need for a smooth recovery. That includes straightforward aftercare instructions, guidance on any medications, and a detailed plan for follow-up care if additional treatment is needed. You leave our office with your questions answered and a clear path forward, so the only thing left to focus on is feeling better.

Skilled Emergency Care When Every Minute Counts

Frequently Asked Questions

Emergency Dentistry FAQs

When your tooth hurts, breaks, or gets knocked out, you usually want clear answers fast. We know you may be worried about pain, timing, and cost, so we keep our emergency care straightforward, calm, and focused on the next step.

When should I call for an emergency visit?

Call when you have severe tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, or bleeding that will not stop. We also see patients for infections, lost fillings, and damage from accidents, and we offer same-day emergency appointments when possible.
Emergency treatment is priced based on what you need that day. If your visit leads to more extensive care, we can discuss Sunbit pre-approval for monthly payments and also review other financing partners, including Cherry, Proceed, LendingClub, Sunbit, and CareCredit.
We start with modern anesthetics and take time to get you numb before we begin. If your case feels difficult or you are anxious, sedation may be part of the plan. Afterward, we give clear instructions so recovery feels manageable.
The visit length depends on the problem. Some emergencies are handled in one appointment, while others need follow-up care like a root canal, extraction, or crown. We focus first on stabilizing the issue, then map out the rest of your treatment.
Most patients with pain, swelling, trauma, or a broken tooth are good candidates for an urgent visit. During your exam, we review your symptoms, imaging, and medical history so we can choose the safest approach and decide whether sedation is appropriate.
That depends on what we treat. A filling, crown, root canal, extraction, or replacement plan each has its own timeline. We look beyond the first visit and help you choose a long-term solution when a tooth cannot be saved.
You always stay in control, but waiting can let pain or infection get worse. If you are unsure, we can explain the findings on-screen, discuss your options, and help you decide whether to stabilize the problem now or plan the next step.
We start by listening to your symptoms and reviewing your medical history. Then we take the images needed to see what is happening, explain what we find, and begin treatment if possible. You will know what we are doing and why.
Aftercare depends on the procedure, but we give specific instructions before you leave. That may include how to manage swelling, what foods to choose, and how to protect the area while it heals. If a tooth is removed, we also discuss replacement planning.
No, we do not rush you. We use a no-pressure approach, review your images on-screen, and talk through options in plain language. If anxiety is part of your story, we can also discuss sedation so your visit feels more manageable.
